Digital art using Apophysis

So, I’ve had this Apophysis program sitting on my drive at work for about the last year. I downloaded it and played around with it for a few minutes one weekend while working, but  I must have got distracted by my job because I haven’t come back to it since. I vaguely remember seeing the name on one of the many forums I visit.

Apophysis is a fractal flame editor and renderer for Windows. Apophysis has many features for creating and editing fractal flames, including an editor which allows one to directly edit the transforms that comprise the fractal flame, a mutations window, which applies random edits to the triangles, an adjust window, which allows the adjustment of coloring and location of the image, and even a scripting language with direct access to most of the components of the fractal.

It’s easy to get some ok looking digital art happening. I’m quite happy with my first attempts below, but they are pretty lame compared to some of the art I’ve seen out there. The third one is a lossless .png file 1.3 MB is size so be patient. The first two are lossy .jpgs, under 250K. I hope you like them. I have another one on the boil which is going to take another 30 hours to render.

Tron Legacy looks awesome

Tron LegacyHead over to www.firstshowing.net for a nice hi-def advance teaser trailer for the movie “Tron Legacy”. It looks really sweet. Tron is one movie I’ve always wanted to be redone with advanced CGI.

I’d also love the old Battlestar Galactica flight scenes to be redone. The series had the same 5-6 shots over and over again, while cutting to a hand on a flight-stick. The imagery never seemed to match the dialog. They’ve done it with the original Star Trek series and that looks pretty sweet. You don’t want to over-do it, but full flight scenes and some subtle additions to other scenes would make it much more watchable. Star Wars is probably a good example of overdoing it, or doing at least some parts wrong. For example, replacing Seb Shaw with Hayden Christiansen in the final scene made no sense.

Cosmic Motors

Some of the finest examples of concept cars and digital design I’ve ever seen can be found at Cosmic Motors. I’m just blown away by the appearance of these vehicles, and the realistic settings, props and chicks. This is exactly the kind of stuff I have wanted to get into ever since I got out of Uni; design and render cool futuristic vehicles. Animation isn’t so much part of that desire, and while I can see that it’d be a natural extension it would introduce rather a lot of complexity.
