Canada wins the 2010 hockey gold medal

Woo hoo! Canada beat USA 3-2 in overtime to win the hockey gold medal. I’m so happy!

Thanks so much to channel 9 for showing us only the third period. Before the game, I was 50-50 on Canada winning. It’s not like Canada is the default best team in the world. It’s not like the US basketball team in Barcelona who were a billion dollar team of all stars  and no doubt that they’d win gold without raising a sweat. No, there’s as many Europeans in the NHL as there are Canadians and they all know each other’s games very well. In recent years, Sweden beat Finland for gold in Turin, Czeck Republic beat Russia in Nagano and Sweden beat Canada in Lillehammer (which, incidentally, was one of the best games I have ever seen and it was a pity it went to a shootout). Most Olympic hockey rosters come from the NHL, and you’ll often see NHL team mates on opposite teams.

So coming into the third period (thanks again for sticking with the news and weather, Ch9) I was happy to find Canada 2-1 up. There were some exciting moments as Canada twice hit the post. It looked like Canada was going to hold on but in the last 1:30 USA of course went for 6 on 5 and managed to pull an equaliser out of their collective asses.

So, it went to 4 on 4 in overtime. I was a mess for most of it, but about 7:30 in Sydney Crosby took an assist from Jerome Igilna and found the back of the net. Go Canada GO!

It was good seeing the crowd reactions at various locations. They’d set up large TVs in different public spaces and they were all packed. You’d suddenly see everyone, a sea of red and white, rise as one and start cheering like mad. I heard that the CAN-RUS game had 50% of the country watching. I wonder how many were watching this one?

Anyhow, good on ya Canada!
